The Fons & Sien sewing pattern. Available in sizes 18mo-6y. A fast go-to pattern here at the WenSJe residence. I named it after my very first sewing idol, my nana Alphonsine.

Enjoy!

Tutorial

Cut the pattern pieces and tape them together where needed (A meeting A, B – B, …)

Cut the pieces out of the fabric.

Attention! At the neckline (at the front and back pattern piece), seam allowance is included! On top of the shoulder, you need to count 1cm again.

For the Fons shirt: At the bottom of the shirt, cut 2cm seam allowance.

For the Sien dress: The bottom of the shirt piece is now on the lighter gray line (check the size you’re sewing). Add 1cm seam allowance at the bottom.

Align the shoulders of the front and back pattern piece, right sides together and sew.
! Skip this step if you’re making the short sleeves version ! Attach the sleeves. Pin, right sides together, the middle of the sleeve on the shoulder seam. Now you can pin further towards the sides. Sew.

Sew in one movement the sides and the sleeves together, making sure the seams are lined up where the sleeves are attached to the front and back pieces.

If you’re making the short sleeves version, just attach the sides of the front and back pieces.

Cuffs and neckband

Cut the cuffs and neckband according to the right size in the table. Seam allowance (1cm) is included here.
Fold the cuffs and neckband in two, right sides together and sew in place.
Turn them, right sides out and fold in half again.
Cuffs. Align the seam of the cuffs with the side seam of the shirt. Pin and sew.
For the long sleeves, you need to stretch the fabric of the cuff a little. The cuffs are a bit smaller than the sleeves.
Flip the cuffs.

Neckband. Mark the middle of the neckline on the front piece and back piece.

Mark the middle of the neckband (the opposite side of the seam).
Pin the seam of the neckband on the mark at the back piece and pin the front of the neckband on the mark you made on the front piece of the shirt.

Attach. Here too, you will have to stretch the neckband between the front and back markings. Make sure not to stretch the fabric of the shirt itself.

You can topstitch the neckline with a twin needle. Not necessary, but pretty. 🙂

Hem and skirt

Fons shirt:

Neaten the bottom with an overlock or zigzag stitch.

Hem the bottom. Measure the 2 cm you cut extra, flip, pin in place and use a twin needle or stretch stitch to sew the hem of your shirt.

Sien dress:

Cut the skirt pieces. Check the sizes in the table. Seam allowance (1cm) is included here.
Sew the side seams of the skirt pieces, right sides together.

Sew, with largest stitch length possible, two rows alongside the top of the skirt piece (one at 0,5cm and one at 1cm for example). Or do it the lazy way like me and use only one row. Do this once for the front piece and once for the back piece of the skirt. Then you can easily gather the two pieces. Pull the threads until the skirt piece is just as wide as the bottom of the shirt. You made a gathered skirt.

Align the top of the skirt piece with the bottom of the skirt piece, right sides together. Pin the side seams of the skirt piece on the side seams of the shirt piece. Then pin the rest of the skirt to the shirt. Sew. Remove excess thread used to make the gathers.
