Drops of Nena

Is het dit goeie weer? Is het de vermoeidheid? Is het ons weekend away met twee? Is het de rommel op en rond mijn naaimachines? Is het de overvloed aan stofjes die ik besteld heb en waar ik maar naar lig te staren in plaats van erin te knippen? Geen idee. Afgezien van enkele cadeautjes kwam er hier de laatste tijd niet veel toonbaars van onder die machines. Hopelijk keert die ‘sewers block’ gauw, want er liggen dus echt wel nog veel zomerstofjes te wachten.

Deze Nena top maakte ik nog tijdens de patroontest voor de Nena jurk en top van Kaatje Naaisels. Het is mijn eerste testversie en zit dus wat ruimer dan deze. Lees hier meer over de specificaties van het patroon en waarom het een aanradertje is. Ik gebruikte in deze versie wel een plooi in het achterpand en ik stikte de Engelse naad in de zijkant niet, vandaar dat het wat breder valt. Dit topje heeft achteraan een koord en vooraan een lintje en net als de andere ook paspel tussen het bovenste en onderste stuk van het achterpand.

Of het motiefje van de stof nu echt matcht met het weertje van het moment… daar valt over te discussiëren. Bekijk het als verkwikkende druppels uit een fonteintje of zo. Ik kocht er een hele tijd geleden een half metertje van. Het is een lichte, soepele canvas. Ideaal voor dit project.

Gisteren werd het topje gevuurdoopt tijdens een picnic in Planckendael. Ken je die, zo van die ouders die altijd slabben vergeten meenemen? Jep, het oh zo zorgvuldig in elkaar gestoken topje zit onder de aardbei, meloen, tomaat en ijs. Het ligt in de week as we speak, fingers crossed. Tips om vrij uitgesproken vlekken te verwijderen zijn alsnog altijd welkom… Gelukkig zie je hier nog wat spik en span spam. 🙂

Louise sweater by Misusu patterns

Laten we eerlijk zijn. Zaterdag was eerder een uitzondering. Heerlijk gaan fietsen in het zonnetje en aperitieven op het terras.
Verder laat de lente toch wat op zich wachten, zo lijkt het. Dus is een trui nog wel een onmisbaar item, vaak zelfs nog onder de dikke winterjas.

Peinzend over welke trui ik zou maken voor dochterlief, spotte ik dit exemplaar. Een leuke snit én zakken!
Elles van Misusu patterns zocht nog testers voor dit originele patroon en ik was blij dat ik mocht meedoen.
De Louise sweater is een patroon met veel fijne opties. De zakken op het voorpand, de speelse verdeling tussen voor- en achterpand en de split in het achterpand. Korte en lange mouwen. En een jurkversie. Veel mogelijkheden om te variëren dus.

De oorspronkelijke bedoeling van het patroon is dat het achterpand een niet-rekkende stof is. Bij mij werd het wel twee keer rekkende stof. Ik vond die zo leuk bij elkaar passen, de streepjes en de jeanslook stretchstof. En dan nog de oudroze stof voor de zakken die komt piepen. Ik ben best tevreden van haar nieuwe speeltrui. Stoer en schattig tegelijk. Altijd een winner hier.

Ik was ook onder de indruk van de schitterende tutorial. Good job, Elles! De tekeningen zijn enorm duidelijk. Je weet meteen wat je moet doen. Iemand als ik, die al eens in volle enthousiasme de tekst in een tutorial uit het oog verliest, komt hier vlot zonder kleerscheuren (letterlijk, moehahah!) door. Dat maakt dit patroon ook echt geschikt voor beginners, ook al heeft het veel ‘speciallekes’.

Fotoshoots met Jente zijn de laatste tijd best een uitdaging. Deze keer wou ik gewoon met haar gaan fietsen en zou ik wel foto’s nemen. Moeilijker dan gedacht en dus geen echt goede shot van de hele trui. En ze kreeg het toch vrij snel koud… En dus, nadat ik een oude vrouw gerustgesteld had “Neenee, ze zal geen verkoudheid krijgen, we wonen hier vlakbij en gaan meteen terug naar binnen.”, besloot ik om toch maar binnen lekker warm keukentje te spelen met mijn klein charelke.

Juliette pattern by Sewpony: ruffle love

Right after I bought her Cosy Swimsuit pattern (still looking for the perfect fabric…), I noticed that Sewpony lady, Suz, launched a tester call for a new dress and top she was designing together with Jill from Kneesocks and Goldilocks. Happy dance over here when I was able to test this stunning Juliette dress and top pattern.

Vlak nadat ik haar Cosy Swimsuit patroon kocht (nog steeds op zoek naar een goed stofje hiervoor…), merkte ik dat Suz, Sewpony lady, testers zocht voor een nieuw jurkje en topje dat ze aan het ontwerpen was samen met Jill van Kneesocks en Goldilocks. Zo blij toen bleek dat ik mee mocht testen voor dit prachtige Juliette jurk en top patroon.

I chose to make the short sleeved top with biais ties at the back. There are many more options such as a dress version, a faux button placket in the front, button and loop closure at the back, in seam pockets, … .

Ik koos voor het topje met korte mouwen met strik op de rug. Er zijn heel wat opties zoals de jurk versie, een vals knopenpad op het voorpand, een knoopsluiting achteraan, zakken in de zijnaad, … .

It’s a very quick and easy project (indeed, no zippers or buttons) although I think it looks pretty fancy and complicated. Always a lovely pattern feature. 🙂 Addicting, this one, be warned. My next Juliette top has already been assembled and approved.

Het is een snel en gemakkelijk project (jep, geen ritsen of knopen) hoewel ik toch vind dat het er sjiek en ingewikkeld uitziet. Altijd fijn aan een patroon, me dunkt. 🙂 Best verslavend, deze, wees gewaarschuwd. Mijn volgende Juliette top steekt al in elkaar.

Normally, I’m not a fan of very girly outfits, but somehow, I know this one (that turned out to be the most girly outfit in her closet) will be a big hit this summer. I started out with my purple-gray test fabric and was too lazy to cut and iron the biais in the same fabric. I found this matching pink biais. (Only I didn’t have the right thread to go with it, but hey, the testing needed to go on…) And to go girly all the way, I made some bloomers in this dusky pink double gaze. I used the baby bloomers pattern, a free pattern by See Kate Sew. I was not completely happy with how it turned out. Next time, I wil heighten the back pattern piece. Now I think it is too tight at the back and too poofy in the front. 🙂 (I made the medium – 6-12 mo for my 2 year old.)

Normaalgezien ben ik niet zo’n fan van erg girly outfits, maar ik heb de indruk dat deze (zo blijkt de meest girly outfit in haar kleerkast) echt een hit gaat zijn deze zomer. Ik had een paars-grijs teststofje en was eigenlijk te lui om de biais uit dezelfde stof te knippen. Kwam dat mooi uit dat ik een mooi matching oudroze biais had liggen. (Ik had alleen niet het juiste garen voor erbij, maar kom, het testen moest gebeuren…) En onder het motto ‘girly all the way’, maakte ik er nog een pofshortje bij in oudroze double gauze. Ik gebruikte hiervoor het gratis patroon ‘baby bloomers’ van See Kate Sew. Ik was niet helemaal tevreden met het resultaat. Volgende keer ga ik het achterpand was verhogen. Nu vind ik het wat te strak achteraan en te pofferig vooraan. 🙂 (Ik maakte de medium – 6-12 maanden voor mijn tweejarige.)

It was Jente her suggestion to put on the hat while taking the pictures. Perfect idea, little fashion queen!

Now we only needed some cookies and flowers (in the pink cup, moooommmyy!) to keep her a happy posing toddler.

Nu hadden we enkel nog koekjes nodig en enkele bloemetjes (in de roze beker, mamaaaaaaa!) om ervoor te zorgen dat ze een happy poserende peuter bleef.

This outfit matches her attitude of the last few weeks. Her girly girl moves are so hilarious. The way she brushes her hair out of her face with her hands (catwalk style). The way she says: “Come on mom” while making the ‘make sure you come over here’ handgesture. And the way she holds her sandwich, between thumb and index finger, other fingers higher. (And at the same time stuffing her face and hair – literally! – with sandwich.) Really!? Her remarks are also loaded with this attitude. After Wouter shaved, she turned to him and said: “Very good, dad. Now Jente giving kisses better.” Last but not least, in daycare, during music time, apparently she was shaking like mad in front of the mirror. Before you start judging, there was no YouTube influence whatsoever, except for Miffy.
Oh well… And to say I was a really boyish girl growing up.

Ik moet zeggen dat deze outfit haar ‘attitude’ van de laatste weken weerspiegelt. Haar girly girl moves zijn té grappig. De manier waarop ze haar haar uit haar gezicht wrijft (catwalk style). De manier waarop ze zegt: “Kom, mama, kom.” terwijl ze heel duidelijk een ‘maak dat je hier bent’-gebaar maakt. En de manier waarop ze haar boterham vasthoudt, tussen duim en wijsvinger, andere vingers omhoog. (En tegelijk die boterham in haar mond proppen alsof hij zou verdwijnen als die niet integraal in haar mond zit op dát moment.) Really!? Haar opmerkingen hebben ook wat weg van diezelfde ‘attitude’. Nadat Wouter zich had geschoren, draaide ze zich naar hem en zei: “Da’s goed papa. Nu Jente beter kusjes geven.” En nog ééntje… In de crèche, muziekje aan, was ze blijkbaar kei hard aan het shaken terwijl ze zichzelf in die spiegel bewonderde. Voordat je begint te oordelen, de YouTube invloed is voorlopig niet aanwezig, behalve Nijntje dan.
Ja, kijk… En dan wetende dat ik nogal jongensachtig was toen ik klein was.

Polina dress pattern test + giveaway

This post will be in English, so Olga, the lady behind Coffee+Thread patterns can join in on reading. She’s such a dedicated pattern designer who must have had no sleep and lots of chocolate 😉 the past two weeks.

I think her latest pattern is the reason why the sun decided to show up this weekend. The Polina dress is a very twirly, sunny and girly dress. Although most of my sewing isn’t that girly at all, I love how Jente her new Polina dress turned out.

Barbara told me that there was a search for Coffee + Thread pattern testers (thanks Barbara!). I was too late to sign up, yet Olga told me she could use another tester. I was thrilled to do something completely different than sew Lena dresses all week long (although my addiction that made me publish the pattern is not tempered yet, you’ll see :-)). Slightly more advanced project than the Lena dress though, this Polina. But just as fulfilling. Credits to Olga for the very clear instructions that made a knit fabric sewer such as myself feel confident.

There are several ruffle and skirt options. I chose the long ruffles and the gathered skirt. For the ties on the back, there are also two options. Here, you see small ties. For the button placket on the back, I could’ve used some very fancy buttons. Could’ve, if these snaps weren’t looking at me, saying: “Pick me, you don’t have time for making button holes and to go out and buy decent buttons.” Next time, I promise.

Because this was a pattern test, I used this very cheap mint colored fabric. In the end, when it turned out fine, I pimped the skirt with triangles I cut out of flock foil scraps.

I personally think ironing is out of style, except for ironing on the flock foil. And that was risky business here with Jente insisting on ‘helping’.

In the final and even prettier version of the pattern, the armholes reach a little higher and the frills are slightly smaller too.

The Lady of the house wasn’t very happy about posing. I braided her hair while we were reading, but after rolling around in the couch, there was nothing left of my braiding effort. Enter the fast and simple ponytail. I also had to bribe her with cookies to get her to pose. The only miscalculation in my plan was that she didn’t understand the concept of bribery just yet. She only wanted the cookies…

It got better when we started practicing some words: “Poooooolina” 🙂

Just so you know. After this exhausting photoshoot, we went to the playground. Slightly more enthousiasm on her side.

I’m already thinking of many ways to hack this pattern, so this will not be the last Polina you’ll see here.
